Mom Cooking Tip 5

Lots of recipes call for homemade chicken or vegetable broth, but who has time or inclination to make it? Not me. Canned broths and bouillon cubes have too much salt. I prefer chicken or vegetable base, which comes in jars. Because the flavor is concentrated, you need just a tablespoon or 2.

  1. I have to watch my salt intake. Can you recommend any low sodium broth-like products?

    1. Organic Better Than Bouillon Reduced Sodium Chicken Base has just 15% sodium. The company also makes Reduced Sodium Beef Base and Reduced Sodium Vegetable Base, advertising that they contain 50% less sodium than their regular Base products. The only way I know of to reduce the sodium content even further is to make your broth from scratch. You can also substitute water for broth, although that will affect the flavor.
