I am an old-fashioned cook. Many of us are when holiday dining is involved. I’ve
eaten turkey on Christmas all my life, and even though it’s a big, messy meal I
would feel terrible eating anything else.
If I want to add something new to the holiday menu, I
might choose a new side dish—maybe Honeyed Sweet Potatoes along with the mashed potatoes.
Petite peas have always been the vegetable of choice,
probably because they’re easy and don’t require much thought, apart from actually
having them in the freezer. This year I may
make a pan of Easy Roasted Vegetables along with the peas.
Salmon Spread has been our classic in-the-living-room appetizer for about 25 years. I wouldn’t want to skip it, even though by
the time I get near it hardly any is left.
You’d never predict our traditional dessert choice—not pies, not cakes, not even any cookies. Chocolate-Dipped Oranges. They’re light, healthy and, most importantly, chocolate-heavy. You can eat a dozen and not feel you need a nap.
What better way to make sure the men in the family aren’t
too over-stuffed to be in charge of clean-up!
