Pinto Beans: What Are They and How Do I Use Them?

Dried Pinto Beans (left), Cooked Pinto Beans (right)
Anyone who has eaten refried beans has eaten pinto beans.  They are brown—sometimes light brown, sometimes dark brown—and are often speckled.  They are available cooked in cans and uncooked in plastic bags.

Compared to other dried beans, pinto beans cook quickly, in just under an hour.  Submerge them in water, making sure there is at least 2 inches of water above them.  Cook for 45 minutes over medium heat and then taste to see if they have softened.  If they are still chewy, cook for another 10-15 minutes and taste again.  Continue this process until the beans are soft enough to eat.

Pinto beans can be used as a side dish, as a taco filling, the basis for chili or an addition to soups.  Or you can make your own refried beans.  If you’ve prepared too many beans, freeze the extra ones.
